Description
Valve Steam Deck 64GB Gaming Console
A Handheld PC for Steam Gamers
The Valve Steam Deck is not a mere handheld console — it’s a full portable gaming PC built by Valve to bring your Steam library and PC gameplay into a flexible, handheld form.
The 64 GB model is the base variant, originally using eMMC storage, making it a more affordable entry into the Steam Deck family.
Inside, you’ll find 16 GB of LPDDR5 unified memory (5500 MT/s) in a quad-channel configuration across all models, ensuring snappy multitasking and data access.
The APU is a custom AMD Zen 2 + RDNA 2 architecture, with CPU cores running 2.4–3.5 GHz and GPU compute units up to 1.0–1.6 GHz (approx 1.6 TFLOP) depending on workload.
The native display is 7″ IPS LCD with resolution 1280×800 (16:10 aspect) and standard 60 Hz refresh rate. For visuals, the Deck supports up to 8K@60Hz or 4K@120Hz output over USB-C / DisplayPort in docked mode.
Controls, Inputs & Features
The Steam Deck merges many control paradigms into one device:
Dual thumbsticks with capacitive touch detection (for finger presence)
Two trackpads (left and right), letting you emulate mouse-style control when needed
Buttons & triggers: A/B/X/Y, D-pad, bumpers, triggers, plus “Steam”, “Menu”, “View” and grip buttons on the rear shell
Gyroscope / IMU (6-axis) for motion control capabilities
Microphone, speaker, headphone jack, ambient light sensor, and integrated UI hardware sensors
The Deck also supports microSD expansion (UHS-I), allowing you to add more storage beyond the base 64 GB — handy for larger games.
For docking / external display, the USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB 3.2 Gen 2, power input (PD 45 W), and can drive external monitors with high resolution refresh.
Software & Compatibility
The Steam Deck runs SteamOS 3.0, a Linux-based system built on Arch with the KDE Plasma desktop available in “Desktop Mode.” Valve uses Proton, a compatibility layer that lets many Windows-based games run on the Deck — meaning you can play thousands of existing Steam games out of the box.
Valve’s software updates have improved performance, game compatibility, UI features, and system stability significantly since launch.
Because it is an open platform, you can also install Windows or other operating systems, run emulators, or use it as a general PC — giving you flexibility far beyond typical handheld consoles.
Battery & Performance
The 64 GB Deck sports a 40 Wh battery in the LCD model, delivering between 2 to 8 hours of gameplay, depending on demand (game complexity, brightness, TDP, etc.).
Valve bundles a 45W USB-C PD power supply for charging and docking.
Because the Deck scales its CPU/GPU power dynamically (4–15 W), you can tune performance vs battery life tradeoffs depending on what game you play or how long you need to last.
Use Cases & Practical Benefits
Full Steam library on the go — Play your PC games in handheld format with access to cloud saves.
Dock to TV / monitor — Use the Deck as a PC console, connecting to external displays in up to 8K output.
Expandability — Add microSD storage; use USB hubs, external drives, keyboards, mice, etc.
Modularity & openness — Install other OSes, run non-Steam software, customize your environment.
Versatile controls — Trackpads + joystick + gyros + buttons provide flexibility for many game types.
Portable PC replacement — For light productivity tasks, browser, media streaming, etc.
